On resilience.

How do you define resilience?

Is it rooted in toughness and fortitude?

I used to define it that way. I saw resilience (both in myself and others) as a protective shell that calcified over years of relational trauma and bad luck. It was a badge of honor having made it through each of life’s battles, battered and bruised, but still standing.

My perception of resilience has shifted and I’m curious about what you think about resilience in your life. Take a minute and consider what it means for you.

✨My view of resilience is now rooted in CAPACITY. I experience it as a developable capacity to be present with my full range of human emotion, to withstand hardship and to embrace joy. It is about recovery but more importantly, it’s about the capacity to THRIVE, regardless of our current circumstance.

Building capacity to feel more safe and capable of experiencing stress is a skill that can be practiced. Simple tools and reframing techniques are always at our fingertips. We just have to build awareness of what we need.
